Was I wrong in this incident with my friend?

He had been trying to get away from his bad live in relationship for years. I offered him to move in with me, asi suddenly had a room paying rent etc though...but immediately it didn't work out becuase I had no idea He was a pot smoker and heavy drinker (i'm an athlete). After three weeks I told him i cant live with him adn I'm really sorry. I offered him time to look for another place but He stormed out that night and took his few posessions the next day. he said I'd ruined his chance of ever escaping his bad relationship. I felt terrible, but i couldn't live with him anymore. He gto so angry and will never speak to me again. what else could I have done as I fear He will just go back to his evil de facto
